A series of eleven books, all set in the mid 1940s to early 1950s, featuring Detective Chief Inspector Bryce of Scotland Yard. (In the earliest story he is a mere Inspector, and in the latest he has reached the rank of Chief Superintendent.)
The various stories take him to various parts of England, when local police forces ask the Yard for help in solving difficult and serious cases. In other books, the setting is London.
Bryce is assisted by a number of subordinates, not all of whom appear in every book.
He is an unusual detective, having qualified as a barrister before joining the Metropolitan Police. On the outbreak of war, he joined the army, and was subsequently decorated for bravery. He rejoined the Met in 1945.
